Courtney Kidd

Courtney Kidd was born with 5 Complex Congenital Heart Defects requiring emergency surgery at birth. She has had 6 major heart surgeries in her lifetime. She has also had several pacemaker surgeries, a Hemorrhagic stroke at age 12 caused by complications after heart surgery, 2 brain surgeries which left her paralyzed on her right side requiring her to relearn to walk, to use her right arm and relearn to speak, as well as ongoing seizures (one occurring during ONU finals).

She beat all odds and went on to pursue a college education and graduate from ONU. After college she went into heart failure and had been in end stage heart failure affecting her heart, lungs, liver and spleen for several years before she became eligible for transplant. Courtney was accepted onto the transplant list last year and she, along with her mother, moved to Mayo Clinic in MN last year to await a heart and liver transplant.

Courtney was accepted onto the transplant list last year and she, along with her mother, moved to Mayo Clinic in MN last year to await a heart and liver transplant. She received a New Heart and Liver on November 24th 2015 at Mayo Clinic. She spent 58 days in the hospital after her transplant due to major complications with both her heart and liver and lived in Minnesota for 6 months. She was 6 months into her recovery, finally at home doing well and was at the end of her extensive rehab, and had even began riding her bike for the 1st time in years when she became ill.

Two days later on July 3rd 2015 she became very ill and was air lifted from Kankakee to Mayo by a Leer Jet. The CMVvirus caused a serious lung infection. She consequently developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome at Mayo and was on life support for 2 weeks and hospitalized for another 30 days. She went home for 1 week and again had complications, and was hospitalized for another 2 weeks. She is home still recovering and back in physical therapy at this time. She requires monthly, week long, testing and doctor visits each month at Mayo in MN. Her mother is a nurse and has been unable to return to work this year as she manages Courtney’s daily medical care, medications, therapies, aptsand recovery. Courtney works with children and is unable to return to work for several more months.

Courtney could use help paying for the co-pays on her many prescriptions and over the counter medications (total of 18 at this time), her portion of the medical bills (currently just over 3 million dollars), and with her monthly travel expenses such as gas, food and lodging when she travels to MN each month.
